Windshield wipers park halfway after installing new windshield wiper transmission

I too have an A4. I changed the transmission but now the wipers park halfway, but they are working except for this problem. Could this be that the transmission and motor combo wasn't put back in at the right angle?

Another windshield wiper question...

Just bought a pre-owned 2005 A4 1.8t. Wipers worked fine for a week, then in a snowstorm, on intermittent, all of a sudden they started parking 1/2-way up the windshield. They work fine, and go all the way down when they sweep, but always park 1/2 way up whether on interminntent or turned off. If I push them down with the car off, as soon as I start it (even if the wipers are off) they pop up to the 1/2-way parked position. Does this sound like and arm adjustment I can do or a motor-problem? If motor, is it likely to be covered under the mfg. warranty?

Help!!!!Audi Engine Harness Issue - They replaced my engine but won't replace wiring harnes

Help!!!!Audi Engine Harness Issue - They replaced my engine but won't replace engine wiring harnes….

I have a 2004 Audi A4 1.8t with 61,000 miles and recently the engine seized up due to the oil sludge problem they have with that engine. Audi did all the servicing on the car. When the engine blew I did not even take it to Audi to repair it because I knew they would not do anthing and that it would cost a fortune to get or repair a new engine.

When the engine blew initially I had my mechanic who is very experienced with Audi's take a look at it. He pulled off the valve cover and oil pan. He told me engine needed to be replaced. Since I did not have the $ to do it I waited a while. Recently while searching for a used engine I saw something about these engines blowing due to oil starvation. I towed it to Audi along with a letter from my Attorney. They replaced the engine immediately. They day I was supposed to pick it up I got a call from the service advisor saying that the engine harness needed to be replaced and that Audi would not cover that expense. He mentioned a part was melted and it was brittle. When I asked him to put that in writing this was the Audi dealerships response -

"Re the 2004 A4 engine replacement. The car came to us from an independent with the valve cover & oil pan removed. The coil leads from the harness at this point had already been removed from the coils to remove the valve cover. With time & heat, sometimes the harness wires can get stiff & brittle. If not carefully removed from the coils, the harness wires can get bent & twisted causing the wire casings to break off exposing bare wires that can short to each other & cause the ignition fuse to blow. The independent that had the car may not be aware of this"
When I asked him again about if it was melted they did not respond. What should I tell them? I am pretty broke and can't really afford much work on the car. Should Audi replace this? Do these harness's go bad from normal wear and tear?
Please help… Taking the bus sucks..lol

Thanks in advance

Piston broke on my 2006 Audi A3!

The piston broke on my Audi A3 2.0T the other day and they need to replace the cylinder which is going to cost my extended warranty company (thank god them and not me) more than $4,000. I'm wondering why this has happened to a car with 65,000 miles on it. For the last 30,000 miles my oil light would come on about 5,000 miles after my scheduled oil change which was due every 10,000. The dealership said that these cars burn a lot of oil and they checked for leakage but found nothing. I'm interested to know if these two problems could be connected. Your thoughts?

Help! My oil, abs, and brake warning lights go on, and no tach...

I just had my 99 A6 2.8 serviced, did timing belt and related parts replaced, valve cover gaskets and seals...two weeks after i got my car back the oil warning indicater lights up, the abs and brake warnings light up, and the tach needle stops working.. and ac compressor shuts off...I tested batt. and alt. and mech says they are fine??? the problem stops while driving all at once (sporaticly), all warning lights go off and rpm tach kicks on. It runs good. i'm thinking its electrical? maybe the alternater or a relay?
I had a jetta that did this right before the alternater went out. Any help appreciated.

HELP!! 1996 Audi Cabriolet Can a bad alignment cause broken Struts Strut Mounts and Tie Rods?

Audi Cabriolet 1996, I have never had a car in the shop as much a this Audi...but at this point it's not worth selling it so any info/advice on getting the repairs done as economically as possible would be much appreciated...single mom here on a limited budget :-)

The issue I'm dealing with this time is a loud clunk noise (hard to find the right word to describe)mostly at full locking right turn although I hear the sound not so big at other times as well. After researching I found possibly a bad alignment may have caused some of my issues? Had an alignment in 2006, again a year ago, also had the left front axle replaced at that time, which was defective as it malfunctioned & brought the vehicle to an abrupt stop.Had both left & right front axles replaced several months ago & have weird noise issues since, turned out the left axle again was faulty, had it replaced yet again, this time under warranty.Ok ok the question, took my car in for diagnostics & the mechanic found the struts and strut mounts broken as well as the tie rods. Does this sound right? Recommendations for which company to use for parts & what this job should cost? Also I notice a slicing noise like a meat slicer?? 2 other issues transmission having trouble going into reverse, have to put it back in park and then back to reverse to get it going.. does this sound like a repairable problem or a replacement...the mechanic said it may only need a repair in the $3-400 range what am I looking at to put in a used/rebuilt tranny cost wise? Also I am getting the smell of gas intermittent when the AC is on...comes and goes...what could this be? Any help would be much appreciated...or even better if you know someone in the Phoenix area that works on Audi's and won't charge me a fortune...I'm almost $5k in repairs this year...and/or a reputable online parts dealer where I can save some $$ and order the parts myself...

Thanks in advance!

2006 audi A4 2.0T Alignmnet Problem

I have a 2006 Audi A4 2.0T With 55,000 miles just bought a new set of tires for it. Took it to an alignment shop they adjusted the rear toe but when they went to adjust the front toe either the jam nut or the adjuster was seized up and wouldn't move. They said they sprayed everything down with PB blaster and to come back in a couple days to see if they could get them to move. I returned 3 days later and it still wouldn't move.
They told me they can't heat the tie rod or jam nut because the treads are made of plastic and would melt and the only way to set the front toe would be to replace the tie rods. Is this true? Can the dealership align it without replacing the tie rods? I really hate going to the dealers had a bad experience at both of them and their price is almost double.

Oil Pressure on Audi TT

My oil light has been sporatically coming on and off for a few weeks now, I checked oil and connectors and couldn't figure it out. Being pretty mechanical I opted to pull the pan, change the oil pump & screen, and the oil pressure switch. The motor started fine but within a few minutes the oil light came on again and now stays on. I am sure there is adequate oil pressure, and there was absolutly no sediment or bearing flakes in the pan when I dropped it.

I hooked up a diagnostice cable and all of the scan's showed no problems.

Any ideas would be helpful

'03 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8L 4cyl. car problem - Please help

For about 6months or so my car has been hesitating when I come out of a complete stop and step on the gas but after a few seconds it kicks in. It has always bothered me a little but it never was a major problem; we had the 30,000 mile service on it a couple of months ago and had emissions test ran on it when they did the inspection about a month or so ago and the only thing that threw the test off was a gas cap, so I replaced it but nobody every mentioned anything about any other problems, so I just dismissed it as "that was just the way the car runs:" Last night while driving home it all of a sudden started idleing really weird, it was sputtering and almost sounded like it was going to die when I would stop and when I would drive it made a clanking type sound and sputtered the whole time, the MIL light was also on and flashing the whole time. I took it to one mechanic today that simply got up under it and noticed that the catalytic converter was glowing red (hot) on one end of it but they could not work on my car because they did not have the right equipment. I then took it to another shop and after running diagnostic, they said it shot some codes, so they checked it out and seemed to find that there was oil leaking and it had gotten onto the spark plugs and he also said something about 2 cylinders and a valve cover gasket; they said that they did not beleive that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced at this time based on their findings, they beleive it was getting hot only because of the problems with the other issues. Has anyone had this happen and does the diagnosis seem logical? They are charging me $97 for the diagnostic and $367 for parts and labor to fix these things.

Could it be a weak battery although the car starts ok.

Problematic allroad

AGH! I love my car, but I hate my car. Here's the message I sent via audi.com:

Hi there, Audi people.

Let me start with the fact that I love my 2001 allroad, when it works. I bought it certified used here in Anchorage, and the warranty expired about a year and a half ago, I think. It's paid off, but I seem to be sinking more money into it these days than I was when I made monthly payments.

I've had many problems with the car since I bought it. Eternally the optimist, each time i bring it in for some major surgery or other, I hope that it'll be fine from here on out... but it's usually within a few months that I have another cash hemorrhage.

I've had the driver's seat replaced due to the heater burning through the upholstery; it took them a year and a half to figure out that a power-loss problem was a brake light sensor (meanwhile, I couldn't accelerate into traffic, which is a white-knuckle adventure); the sway bar brackets were faulty and needed replacement; the dash panel went out (sound system and climate control) which was caused by a faulty heater control head and instrument cluster; and a leaky front air spring was replaced. I'm not so concerned with wear items such as brakes and c/v boots. these things happen.

So far, that was all under warranty, so, whereas it was a bit of an inconvenience to take my car in often, at least it was only $50 a pop. I must tell you that the people in the service department at Morrison Auto, my local dealership, were great each time, even though they must have been sick of seeing me after a while.

My problem is that now, after my warranty is expired, I'm having more trouble. I just spent $2400 for the timing belt replacement and my scheduled 90K service. I expected that. But what I didn't expect was for my front suspension to collapse again. My car is sitting on its tires right now, in my driveway, and it's apparently going to cost me $400-$800 to get it fixed (most likely a conservative estimate, in my experience). I know that shit happens, but I really can't afford to replace air springs every couple of years (the last one was in October of '06). I was wondering: looking at Audi forums, this does not seem like an uncommon problem. Can I expect each air spring to go out? Just my front ones (the rears have been fine)? Will I have to repeatedly replace each one?

As I said, I love, love, love my allroad, and I bought an Audi for your reputation for quality workmanship and great service. But I'm going to have to move into this car soon if these repairs continue.

My current impression of what AUDI stands for: "All Ur Dollars Incinerated."

Thanks a lot for your attention,
Amber

I have a 2004 A4 with the five spoked wheels. Does any one have the friggin' lug wrench that actually fits over the lugs of the front wheels? Or could it be I'm missing something? The wrench provided to not work on the front wheels (too small) and I'm thinking how the fuck am I supposed to change my tired if needed without the right wrench? Seems kind of weird to me...

A4 1.8T coolant hose burst!

I recently had my A4 1.8T engine rebuilt (on Audi's dime, by the dealership), because it overheated and was destroyed due to the oil sludge problem with these engines.
Couple days after I got it back, the coolant warning light came on at start-up, then went off. I took it into the dealership, service mgr. said it was 'nothing serious', and they simply topped off the coolant and tightened the hose clamps.
10 days later .. I was driving at 60 mph on a bridge/freeway (no shoulder) when the coolant warning light came on, at the same time, the engine was rattling. I slowed and stopped as quickly as I could. Bottom line, they say a coolant hose burst, resulting in engine overheating and now I need a new cylinder head for $4800! I said - but you just not only rebuilt the engine, but re-inspected the coolant system - why didn't you catch it? They said they could not have visually detected that the hose was defective when they checked the coolant system.
I think they obviously overlooked something, and missed the defective hose and are therefore responsible for this damage. Does anyone know if it's true that you can't tell - visually, or by touch/inspection - if a coolant hose is bad to the point of being about to burst?

99 A4 trouble starting when weather is at freezing

I have sometimes have trouble starting my A4 Audi Avant when the weather is at freezing. I start it in the morning and drive to the post office (2 miles) and when I try and restart after sitting a couple of minutes the engine cranks but the engine does start, so far after trying and letting it sit and trying it a couple of times it starts.
I have already replaced the battery and the spark plugs and it seems to crank over fine. Once it starts it runs great it only happens when the temp is at or near freezing, this problem started last winter but the weather warmed up it went away and all summer it started everytime with no issues, the problem started again when the weather got cold. Does anyone have a clue what would be causing this?

Hi, thanks for your assistance!
I have a 1999 Audi A6 2,4 tiptronic. I recently gave the car a real good clean which included dropping the gearchange into tiptronic mode to clean the base of the gear stick. Now the car does not recognise it is in tiptronic mode when selected. The dash display continues to illuminate drive and works normally. My Audi specialist says the electrics appear ok but can't say what is wrong. Any ideas?
Regards,
Tyrone

Another windshield wiper problem, but don't think the motor or linkage assembly!

Hi, So my 99 A4 has 90K miles on it and continues to cost a boatload to maintain. The latest issue is that the wipers started moving very slowly several weeks ago, and then eventually stopped altogether. If I help the wipers along, then they are able to move some on their own, but not very much before stopping again.

I hope the wipers are something I can actually fix myself, so I started into it this morning. I removed the entire wiper linkage system which seems to work smoothly. The linkage ends are by no means 'frictionless', but they do move smoothly.

I also disconnected the Bosch motor to see if it was dead. The motor seems to work when I connect it to a 12V DC transformer, so I think it's in good shape.

My best guess is that the wiper control module is shot. Here's why:

The motor has a 5-pin connector on it to connect to its control module. Between the 5-pin connector and the motor itself are only two wires that power the motor (green / red; probably common / +). The interesting thing is that even when the engine is running and the wipers are turned on, the two contacts from the control module wiring that align with the wires that actually power the motor have zero voltage across them. Also, the voltage across one of the contacts that aligns with one of the motors' wires and one of the contacts that does not align with anything reads 14 volts.

So if the linkage and the motor seem to work, and the voltage driving the motor is zero, then the controller is dead. Any comments on whether this sounds right? If it sounds right, any advice on how easy or difficult it is to change the controller? Is it possible that it's simply a matter of changing the controller on the steering column, or is there some type of in-line integrated circuit that is buried somewhere behind the dashboard? Thanks for the help...I'm really hoping to not throw $500 on this problem!

What exactly does a sludge kit do?
My son has a 2003 A4 wagon (44k) and the engine was making lots of noise. he is the second owner and has put 10,000 miles on car in approx 1 yr. the diagnostic tests at the dealer were not good. They said that they would first do a sludge kit and if the diagnostics didn't change it could be a bad motor. Apparently the kit worked and the car runs fine. Again, what does the kit do? He had the oil changed twice since he as given the car

Thanks in advance,
i replaced timing and water pump on my 99 audi a6 2.8 (100k miles). After about 2 weeks my coolant tee broke, so i replaced. The same coolant tee broke again after 2 days. Before, normal temperature stays at 190-200F level. Now about 230F. Is my car overheating? Should i be driving it? Any suggestion on finding problem? I can smell antifreeze all the time. Thanks

i just got a 98 a4 1.8t after i got it i found that the turbo has blown. it has grinded the bearings and sent shavings down to the oil pan and clogged up the oil pick up tube causing the motor to lose oil pressure. i checked out the motor and there was no cam, main or rod bearing wear so i went ahead and replaced the turbo, turbo oil feed line, oil pump, and timing belt plus other parts that were unrelated. once the repairs have been done i started the motor to find that it still has no oil pressure. but ive found that the oil filter is filling with oil and the turbo oil feed line does have oil.
i am a ase tec but in brakes and under car care. i do know motors very well but i do not work with them every day. what else could have clogged up? i would think that the oil passeges between the block and head would be too big to be cloggled when the oil pick up screen was so fine.
looking for help, any help i just need my car!

Hy! I am new on this web site and recently bought a used 1999 AUDI A4. My problem appeared 2 days ago. On the screen where milleage usually appears, right now for 15 seconds after i start the car instead of the milleage appears "SERVICE INSP". What is that? Is it the timing belt? The car has 65000 miles and i don't know the recent owner(bought it frim a dealer). What's the problem?
Thank you.

Problems with 04 Audi A4 Keys

I am having problems with the remotes on my keys. Intermittently the keys will stop working. I have had it into the dealership 5 times. In the service documentation they have acknowledged that the key(s) don't work but refuse to do anything about the problem. It is always - "we checked the battery and reprogram". They look at me at the dealership like I am nuts. The most recent occurance, key #1 stopped working, when I got home I tried key #2 - it worked. The next day both keys stopped working. I called and made an appointment to bring it in. Neither key worked for 5 days and of course, the night before I brought it in, key #1started working. Key #2 still would not work. Both keys are intermittent. The dealership is hiding behind Audi America - saying they only administer the warranty. I realize that it is only a key but I am sick of being treated like I am a pain in their side because I expect the keys to work. I have 5k left on the warranty but I have been dealing with this for 2.5 years.
Is this a common problem? Anyone else having these problems?

Trouble removing air filter. 1999 Audi Quattro 1.8t.

I'm trying to figure out how to remove the air filter from my 1999 Audi Quattro 1.8t. I've managed to access the air filter, but can't seem to lift the top of the box off enough to get the damn thing out! I've tried removing this big hose leading to the air box (by unscrewing the clamp), but still don't have enough leeway with all the wires attached to the top of the box. I'm completely frustrated and would appreciate any help. Thanks!

I just bought a 2000 Audi A6, and I noticed water dripping from underneath the car, not the hood but what appears to be the exhaust line (in the middle of the car underneath) ?? after driving it for a day, the water seemed to have stopped dripping, but the MIL light came on now and I hear a whirring noise in the engine....Im taking it into the dealer, but I wanted to get an idea of what this may be? and how much it should cost?
Also I didnt realize so many people have problems with their Audi?? Should I be looking at another car!!?? Should I expect to have problems all the time with it?

Thank you

Need help in making a judgement call:

Here's the quick lowdown on my first Audi (owner 2 yrs).
It has only 52K miles (in Boston), BUT.....

1. It's punishing me with yearly control arm/ball joint problems. (Replaced 5 control arms in the last 3 years.) (~$280 ea.)

2. Front steering rack needs to be replaced as it's begun leaking steering fluid. (~$1800)

3. I'm loooking at 60K miles coming up which seems to be when a timing belt replacement is in order (~$1500)

4. Engine is in great shape, but some of the trimmings (tiptronic, child door lock on left rear) are busted.

Is it time to unload this problematic Audi and start saving for another, or am I just hitting a usual expensive bump in the road.

Thanks in advance for weighing in.....

Hi - I have a 1998 Audi A3 and I have been told that there is an oil leak from the variable valve timing unit and that the unit needs replacing at a cost of £500 plus labour. How critical is the oil leak (ie can I just ignore it) and is it possible to fix it with new seals or does the whole unit have be replaced?

Thanks

Odometer now displays kilometers, not miles

My 2002 Audi TT recently began displaying kilometers in the odometer, Trip Computer and instrument cluster. The date display also now lists (in this order), day, month, year instead of month, day, year. The maual says that cars sold in the US will display miles, while european models display kilometers.

When this began I heard a click that sounded like it came from inside the glove compartment.

Can anyone help me sort this out and fix the issue?

Thanks,

Audi A3 Burn Smell from Engine

I have just bought a 2004 plate Audi A3 1.6, I have recently come across a strange burning smell from the engine, i also noticed that it the smell is also coming form the back of the car so maybe coming from the exhaust, not sure if its burning rubber or oil.

I have recently just had a new clutch change on the car and though it might be the new clutch wearing in, but have beed advised this should not be the case.

All the indicators i.e oil lights etc, temperature gauge are fine and normal.

Any suggestion what it could be?
Think my heater core and or lines may be clogged or maybe air in the system. When i bring it in, how do i make sure when they repair it they dont just say my heater core was shot and charge me for a new one when all i needed was a flush. Any help on what the problem is, i am only guessing

ok, I have a 2002 A4 1.8T and got the high pitch noise coming from the rear end somewhere. My technician told me its the wheel bearings. Just wondered if anyone had any experience with this and how much it cost ?

Using a mirror / flashlight and removing the air cleaner housing I found the leak that has been smellling and smoking. So Passenger bank.. Is this a cam seal? Is there a cam adjuster seal on that side in the rear?

It is leaking on the very back side on the last exhaust pipe.

Thanks!

Best snow tires?

I decided to run winter tires this year, and perhaps get studs. I heard that Bridgestone Blizzaks are awesome - better than most studded tires - and they don't even have studs! So I was getting ready to possibly make that purchase and then I hear that this year they didn't do so well in consumer testing. I'll go look at Consumer Reports, but I was wondering if anyone here has input on snow and ice tires. I ran on all-season BFG tourings last year (also my summer tires) and never crashed, but I'd like to have a leeetle more peace of mind and grabability.

To autostart or not to autostart?

So I live in Alaska and I don't have a garage (well, I have one, but I'm selling it and they probably won't let me park there anymore).

Has anyone here had an autostart put into their Audi? I have a 2001 Allroad.

My service writer said not to do it because if I do, each time they need to diagnose my car, I will have to take it back to the autostart place and have it taken out, so the Audi computers can talk to my computer, then go have it re-installed. Sounds like a pain in the ass.

Anyone?

Anybody know what this part is called??

On a 98 dark blue Audi Quattro its the black rubber strip that runs along each side, about 3/4 down. Mine is not painted, it's just rubber. The damn thing is coming off of it's mounting (partially due to my kicking it).

I can't find a parts place that carries it, so I'm thinking I'll need to glue it on, or something. Any ideas there would help too.
Help Please - Door Lock on Audi A6

All

I am just wondering if anyone has heard of, or has any suggestions for, an intersting problem that I have. I have recently bought an 1999 A6 4.2 Quattro Saloon. I had it checked by Audio when purchased and all was in very good condition. Now the problem:

My Front Passenger Door has jammed closed. The central locking opens all other doors successfully and tries to unlock the passenger door also but to no avail. If I try to open the door from the inside the lock buttone lifts up while the handle is pulled but goes down again when the handle is released (without opening the door) . There is no keyhole on the passenger side to try the key. trying to open the door with the outside handle (whilst the inside handle is pulled open) also doesn't work.

Now the kicker - because the door is closed I can't take the interior dorr panel off to get to the locking mechanism so at the moment I am stymied.

I have taken it to my local audi dealer and the best suggestion they have is to break off the door trim - which in my case (leather door panels) is a special order part costing £300+ which may take 6 months to arrive. That's before even looking at the lock problem.

If anyone has heard of anything similar or has any suggestions of how to get round this I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks ...... Colin

ghost in my car? Audi A6 1.9 Tdi problems.

I drive a Audi A6 1.9 Tdi on a 1998 plate.
I have noticed over the past few months, if i close the car windows after the car ignition is switched off, afterwards the windows come down automatically, and the alarm went off. But that did not worry me too much, because i found a solution .what i noticed was when i closed the windows while the car was running the problem was gone. My theory could be all wrong, i dont really know, but it worked.
Today i mistakenly left the windows open. I Started my car the indicators, and wipers are not working and internaly the dash has problems too. if i turn the key without starting, they seem to work.

Other problem i have is sometimes on the motorway or when i put my footdown on the accelerator, the car loses power. I have changed the glow plugs and had a complete service and the problem has not gone.

I have already spent £900 on suspension and other parts, i am bit reluctant to take it to dealers straight away.
Any advice would be truly appreicated.

Hi, thanks in advance.

For some reason I can't reset my 'in2' service light/display on my 1995 A4 TDi. It seems to be stuck as the 'oil change' warning is over due ! I've had the car for over 8 years now and have never had a problem in the past. I'm using the same tool as I always have. (A VAG tool). Incidentally, the airbag light is now displaying for a few minutes on start up. Any ideas ?

Hope this is clear.
Cheers

Hi guys, I have a 1998 A4 which is burning oil like mad. The car was serviced in March '06 with a full oil change. In June, the car began chugging and I discovered there was no oil left. I put in 4 litres approx. Now 3 months later, it is empty again! There are no leaks and no obvious smoke! Is this normal or should I be getting it checked out? I drive about 1,500 miles a month. Thanks for any help

My Allroad's height adjuster is giving me problems. Often, when I start the car, the indicator will flash as though it's trying to adjust between levels 1 and 2, and it won't stop flashing. I'm not sure what level the car is actually on. I have to fiddle with the buttons and tell it to go to level three and level one a couple of times before it will settle on level two, my preferred level.

Has anyone experienced this before? I'll take it in to the dealership soon... I only have two months left on my Certified Used warranty.

Engine warning light - looks like a coil

Hi there, I bought a 1999 A4 1.8TD recently and I know it may sound stupid and I'm not proud but I bought it even though this yellow light with what looks like a diesel coil was flashing on and off all the time. I was desperate and the car was in great nick and I really trusted the old boy I bought it off - turns out that was a mistake.
Any ideas what the light means and what the car wants me to do to get it to stop flashing?
Last week the digital mileage display also stopped working - I don't know if they are connected?
Thanks to anyone who offers any help whatsoever, Iain.
PS despite what it says below I do have friends.

1.8T engine recall.

About three weeks ago, Audi/VW started a voluntary recall campaign for all 1.8T engines in 1997 to present Audi A4s and VW Jettas. This is due to problems that can occur from oil sludge and oil powder buildup (known as "coking".) As part of the recall, Audi is extending the warranty of 1.8T engines by 8 years, unlimited mileage and transferrable to new owners.

The root of this problem was that Audi/VW never specified that only synthetic oil should be used in the 1.8T. They most likely did this to save money on their free warranty oil changes. Also, the oil capacity on earlier 1.8T's is a bit low for a turbo charged engine. Some people are claiming problems even when using nothing but synthetic oil.

Those of you with these models should have received a letter about this. If you have moved and your mail isn't forwarded and Audi doesn't know your new address, then you should contact them. Its also important to note that people who have been out of warranty will probably have to produce all their receipts for oil changes to qualify for the recall. Hopefully, Audi will include do-it-yourself'ers.

This doesn't mean your 1.8T has a problem. If you've been using synthetic oil, then the engine is probably O.K. If not, you should consider having Audi remove and inspect the engine; if it has wear they will replace it.

What is strange about this recall is that it doesn't include the TT, which has a 1.8T. An aqaintance of mine who owns an A4 1.8T wagon hasn't received any notice. Anyone with a 1.8T should be concerned. After the brake-in period, you should only use synthetic oil in your 1.8T. You also want to frequently (one a week, or daily on long trips) check your oil level. The newer (last 2 years?) 1.8Ts have an oil level sensor, but the earlier ones don't.

There is a web page with more information and rants about this at:

Audi 1.8T bent valves

My A3 1.8T bent all inlet and outlet valves due to timing belt failure. Two weeks after repairs all the exhaust valves were bent. Dealer says that due to a lack of oil pressure (dirty pick-up in sump) the hydraulic chain tensioner did not provide enough tension on the chain causing the two cams to rotated out of sequence, bending all the exhaust valves. Timing belt was still in the correct position and the chain was still on. Is this possible?

1996 Audi A-4 2.8

Hi,
My wife's '96 A-4 is having a few problems which I would like to fix before I have to take it in. First, the remote lock/unlock quit working when a new battery was installed. I have tried to turn the ignition on and then lock the door but with no luck. Maybe I am messing up the sequence?
Also, the condensate drip pan under the console is overflowing on the floor when the AC is running. Can I blow the drain out from under the car? Where exactly does it drain too? If this isn'e the way to go then what is the best way to alleviate this leaking?
Any help, comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Rick

Hi , I have been the proud (second) owner of an A3 1.8T , 2002 52 reg, which now has 58,000 miles on the clock! I am considering either selling it in a few months or keeping it for at least another couple of years but would just like to source any comments on what would be considered to be high total mileage for these engines? Have maintained a full service history and planning to keep it that way.

My 2001 a4 was sitting for about 5 months and the battery died. My key alarm isnt working i got new batteries and tried the little "handshake" with it and it still isnt unlocking the car. I have to basically jimmy rig it each time I want to open or unlock the door by locking the driver door from the back of the car so the alarm goes off. Got any suggestions on how to get the key working again?

I have only had the car for a month now and it appears to be getting louder. It sounds more like something is catching and the slower i turn the car the knocking sound also slows down. However, I am unable to see from where it could catch. Any help would be apprecited regards deborah :)

in the past few weeks, my ac has stopped working twice...
in each instance, it was running fine then suddenly the recycled air icon turns off and the air becomes just vent air, not cold... when i stop the car and turn the engine off, everything works fine upon next startup...
any ideas? my intuition leads me to believe that the compressor may be on the fritz... but since everything is usually fine and i can fix the thing by shutting down, perhaps it is a connection to the computer, or maybe the filters need to be changed...

1994 100S Check Engine Light

I have been experiencing the "Check Engine Light" occasionally. It only comes on when the A/C is on, and when I step on the accelerator at the same time. For example, the light comes on while accelerating, turn off A/C, light goes out. The light would also go off if I back off the accelerator. I also have a whirring noise that sounds like a chain, once again only when the A/C is on. I assume this might have to do with one of the belts associated with the A/C. Is there any crosslink between the drive for the A/C belts and the check engine light? Any other ideas?

Allroad discontinued... or is it?

Well, I heard from all over the place that the Allroad is going down the cutes in favor of the new SUV. However, one was spied by Car & Driver:

http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=29&article_id=10628

The artical says it sits hgiher than the current Allroad, but I dont' see that. It looks tro be sitting a little lower than mine, which I keep on level 2 of the height adjuster.

Thoughts? There is talk that it's going to be marketed strictly overseas. Which makes sense, they like smaller vehicles over there (nto a full-size SUV).

95 Audi A4 Aftermarket Stereo - Lead problem

Recently purchased a Soundmax CD stereo for my Audi A4. The car did not have a stereo but does have the facia. The Stereo came with the adapter leads (12 male pin) and my car already has the female adapter with 12 pins. The problem I've got is that one of the pins on the stereo lead is in a different position to the one coming from the car. Looking at the stereo wiring diagram it's the Battery (+) lead. Halfords are telling me I need some adapter lead that costs 35quid! or 45 if I've got a Bose System. Not sure if I have Bose, I do have 6 speakers (2 in each front door and 2 in the back). Anyway surely it's just a matter of either moving the wiring to the right position on the car leads or plugging a simple adapter in between the car lead and stereo to "Divert" that 1 pin! HELP!

I've searched the web high al low and can't find two items that I need replaced on a 2002 A6 Quattro, 3.0.
First is the dip stick, it broke in half a month after I bought the used car, and second, I need the fog light grill for the drivers side. Seems the tabs broke off and it escaped.
Any help, direction or suggestion would be welcomed, I'd try a local dealer but I'm trying to stay away from having to get a second mortgage!!

1996 A4 quattro front end clunk over bumps

I'm getting a clunk out fo the front end of my 1996 Audi A4 quattro when I go over bumps at slow speeds. It is particularly noticeable when pulling in or out of my garage, going over the 1" drop from the driveway to the garage floor.

The steering rack, and front end control arms and tie rods were all replaced recently. The car has 76K miles on it. I didn' t notice the noise before the steering rack was replaced, but it was there before the control arms were replaced.

The mechanic can't find it. He had the aligner look at it, too. Nothing appears to be loose.

Any ideas as to what else to look at?

Thanks.

I HAD A BIG ANTIFREEZE LEAK SO I TOOK MY CAR TO GET SERVICED. ( CPO WARRANTY)
I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A BAD PUMP THAT WAS NOT PUMPING ANTIFREEZE
THROUGHOUT MY TURBOS TO COOL DOWN THE SYSTEM.

I GOT MY CAR BACK AND IT DRIVES OK BUT NOT EXCELLENT HOW IT WAS BEFORE.
( I ONLY HAVE 35000 MILES ON THE CAR SO IT SHOULD RUN GREAT)

NOW MY CAR FEELS LIKE ITS OVER HAULING. USUALLY I WOULD PUNCH ON THE GAS AND THE CAR WOULD FLY. NOW I PUNCH THE GAS AND IT TAKES ABOUT 3-4 SECONDS TO THE CAR TO KICK IN AND ACCELERATE. IT FEELS AS IF THE RPMS RISE BUT THE CARS SPEED DOES NOT CORRECTLY...SOUNDS LIKE A BIG ROAR.. MAYBE LIKE THE GEARS ARE NOT MAKING A SMOOTH TRANSITION, LIKE THE CAR STAYS IN 2ND GEAR WHEN ITS SHOULD BE IN 3RD.

"RPMS RISE BUT THE CARS SPEED IS NOT"

( EXAMPLE : IF I TRY TO PASS A SLOWER CAR IN MY LANE, I PRESS THE GAS TO MOVE TO THE NEXT LANE AND IT TAKES A FEW SECONDS FOR THE ACCELERATION TO KICK IN. I FEEL LIKE I MIGHT GET REAR ENDED BY THE OTHER CAR BEHIND ME BECAUSE THE CARS SPEED IS NOT PICKING UP QUICK.

THE DEALER HAD MY CAR FOR ABOUT 2 1/2 WEEKS AND I DONT KNOW WHAT THEY DID & DID NOT DO. HELL FOR ALL I KNOW THEY SWITCHED MY TRANSMISSION ....I JUST DONT KNOW .... BUT MY CAR IS NOT RUNNING IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AS BEFORE.

DEALER SWEARS THAT THE CAR IS OK.... BUT IM NOT SATISFIED...
HOW DOES AN ANTIFREEZE LEAK TURN INTO A SPEED PROBLEM ????

ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT I MIGHT NEED TO LOOK INTO ???

MAYBE GET A SECOND OPINION???

Needing Great Aluminum Cleaner - Roof Rails

I can't seem to get the weathered haze and spots from the roof rails. I don't think the rails were never cleaned nor waxed. Very dull. Tried cleaner wax, aluminum cleaner (kitchen variety), couple of other cleaners - nothing. When wet - it looked like it was going well - but dry and polish and only a little impact. I'm tempted to get a mag cleaner and/or email meguire (sp). Anyone know of a good product for this?

Does anyone know how to reset the inspection service interval warning on a 1996 A6? The manual my garage has says:
1. push in the right button (odometer)
2. turn on ignition
3. release the button
4. press and release again
5. pull out the left (clock) button until it goes off

This doesn't work!

1999 Audi A6 1.8T Advice Please

Hi
hope all you people are doing ok.
With regard to a 1999 A6 1.8T, if properly maintained how many miles are these engines good for? When will the engine die?

Miles until automatic gearbox dies?

What precise synthetic oil must be used?

Best Spark Plugs to use?

What service intervals when it goes over 100,000 miles?

Thankyou
MM

'97 oil leak nightmare - part 3

Hey all,

So, after buying a '97 A4 2.8 Quattro with 150k miles on it, I want to drive the thing off a cliff. I made the mistake of not getting it checked out before I purchased, and I've been kicking myself in the ass ever since. So the car is leaking oil.... and burning oil... So I took it upon myself to take it in, and see what the source of the leak could be.

So I first take it to a local mechanic in my neighborhood, who doesn't necessarily specialize in Audis. He claimed it was the head gasket, and gave me an estimate of $1600+. So naturally, I decided to get other opinions. So the next shop I took it to, which is a VW / Audi specialty shop said that it was the "Breather Valve". He claims that it would be a very labor intensive repair, about 8 hours, as he would have to dismantle the intake manifold. He said that he would replace a couple of other gaskets / hoses / seals while he was in there. He gave me a quote of $900. I decided that I wanted one more opinion before doing anything. So I took it to another Audi specialty mechanic. He gave me an ENTIRELY different list of components that he thought needed to be replaced. He thought that the main sources were the Oil Pan Gasket, the Oil Cooler Seals, the Oil Cooler hose, the Valve Cover Gaskets, and the Cam Plugs. He gave me a quote of $775 to replace all of those parts. I asked him if he saw any major leakage coming from the breather valve, and he said no. I showed him where the 2nd mechanic was pointing to, when he said it was the breather valve, and he said that that wasn't even where the breather valve was! He suggested that I get my engine steam cleaned so he could have another look and confirm that those are the sources.

So, naturally, getting three COMPLETELY diferent opinions is a bit unsettling. I mean, I don't know who to trust here. I don't have any first hand reccomendations on who to use, and am going into all of this based on blind faith of the mechanic, since my knowlege of cars is next to nothing.

If anyone has can shed any light on this, I'd greatly appreciate it! Do the quotes sound reasonable? Do the diognosis sound reasonable? Who would you trust most based on the diognosis given? Is there anything more I can do to determine what the real problem is?

One other concern that I want to throw out there is my gas milage.... My computer is giving me an average reading of 10.5 up to 12.8 MPG for city driving. This seams extremely low for a V6, and i'm going through more gas than I was with a V8 Lexus! I only got about 160 miles to my last tank. This can't be typical... right??? Could this be linked to the oil leaks? If not, any ideas on what it could be? I have had the oil and air filter changed....

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide!

1998 A4 2.8 timing belt

The maintenance book suggests replacing the timing belt every 90K miles.

I'm currently at 68K so I figured I'm fine. Talking to my support guy the other day he told me the book had it wrong and it had to be replaced every 60K.

and quoted it as a $1500 job!

Ouch! Ouch!

I haven't replaced it yet as I don't have $1500 laying around, but now I'm scared to drive the thing around the corner.

Oil cooler -- do-it-yourself repair -- anyone know how?

I have a 1998 Audi A4 w/ V6 engine. I'm currently taking an auto repair class and trying to learn a little about do-it-yourself repairs.

In the course of learning how to change my oil, the repair technician identified a leak around the oil cooler -- there is build-up of coolant around the hose. He seemed to think it wasn't a big deal, and could be fixed fairly easily.

I've identified the part online -- I think -- but I can't find any instrions on the procedure to fix the oil cooler. (I have a Haynes repair manual, which seems to have every other repair besides this one).

Anyone have any advice for me?

Or did Audi upgrade the connectors?? I ask because off the shelf stereos dont allow my rear speakers to work, so iv opted for a genuine Audi A4 1 from ebay!
Anyone wiv any info please post it, it will b much appreciated!

1998 Audi Oil issues

I recently had my timing belt changed. They did not replace cam seals at that point.

After the change I notice the smell of burning oil when the car starts in the morning. Twice while driving around my Oil light in the dashboard has lit up. This seems to happen when then car is stuck in heavy traffic and the temp displayed in the dashboard seems much higher than usual. 1st time the light did not stay on, but I pulled over and added more oil. Second time I was blocks away from home and just put it in the garage. Dipstick shows it has plenty of oil right now.

Right now I believe they screwed up and made my car leak.. and hopefully it's nothing more serious than that. But maybe I should take my future business somewhere else. Am I wrong here?

I have a problem with my turn signals/flashers on a 2002 A6 3.0. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, and when they do, they frequently stop. It's been getting worse over time. I mentioned it at a trip to the dealer for a recall and another problem a few months back, and the service manager said it sounded like a flasher module, but they didn''t fix it then and I didn't catch that until later. Yesterday, I bought a new flasher module at the local car parts store where they told me it was most likely under the dash on the drivers side. There's a black panel there that would have to be removed, and Audi seems very good at hiding anything obvious that would help me remove it. However, the clicking sound when I turn it on seems to be coming from higher up in the center console, possiby near the emergency flasher switch (guessing after looking at some of these messages). I have two questions I hope someone here can help me with. The obvious one is, Where does the module go? The second question is, how do I get there? There's a panel under the left side of the dash where it isn't immediately obvious how it is removed. On that, there's a white clip at the bottom above the brake pedal that may or may not have something to do with taking the panel off. It looks like pushing it to the side and sliding the black panel the other way would get the panel down, but again, I don't even think the module will be there when I'm done. If I need to remove this panel, I'd rather not break it, so what are the general steps involved. If not, can someone give me the general steps to get to where I need to be? Cash is tight at the moment, so going to the dealer is my last option. I'm not automotive savy, but can generally scare my way around these things with a little direction, and would really appreciate some help.

Some interesting news from Audi

I was just looking at Audi's revenue statement, on their web site, the URL is:

http://www.audi.com/audi/com/en1/company/news/press_releases/annual_report_2005.html

They had a record 2005, and are off to a fast start in 2006. But the thing I find very interesting is Audi's plan to introduce ONE NEW MODEL PER MONTH. I assume by "new model" they mean, in many cases, slight modification of an existing one.

Looks like Joshua is going to be busy!

'97 A4 Oil Leak Nightmare - Part 2

Hello all. Thanks to all of you that replied to my first post. Your input was a great help. So the next chapter of the story has unfolded, and I would like to see if any of you can further help me make a decision.

So, I bought this Audi a few weeks back, and have noticed since then a burning oil smell. So I took it into a mechanic that I thought I trusted. The first time I took it in, he said there was too much grime and oil residue on the engine to determine where the oil leak was originating. So he put some die in the engine that would supposedly help him pin point the leak. He said that he would probably have to clean up the engine as well. So I took it back in last week, and they performed the black light inspection to see where the die was coming out. He claims that it is the head gasket. So I asked him if I could see under the car, so he could show me where it was coming out. He was very reluctant to do so, which automatically put up a red flag for me. So he finally agreed to lift the car up, and I look under to see that they hadn't even touched the engine. It still had all of the grime and residue that he claimed was keeping him from finding the leak! So I called him out on it, and he didn't really give me any good response. So.... I am planning on getting atleast two more oppinions. But my question is this.... He estimated that the repair would cost at least $1600. He claims that he would have to totally dismantel the head, and have about 12 hours worth of labor, and about $300 worth of parts. Is this a fair estimate? Does it really require that much work? Any other suggestions for me?!!

1998 A4 Avant Door Sensor Chime

I just bought a 98 A4 Avant. When I turn the car on there is a intermittent chime that sounds for 60 seconds and shuts off. When I turn the headlights on I get a steady sound that also lasts and additional 60 seconds. The dealership said it is a faulty door latch sensor that tells the car the door is open or shut. Has anyone encountered a similar problem or have any ideas on a fix? They quoted $200 + Labor for a new sensor.

Factory CD changer Cable

Ok so I've come up with a plot to connect my '98 Audi to an ipod.

I'm planning on using this, http://usaspec.com/ipodvw.htm Which should make the factory stereo think that the ipod is a CD changer.

Reading through the docs before buying this, it says I have to connect it to a 13 pin round cable that I should find on the driver side trunk behind the liner.

I didn't pull the liner out entirely, but I pulled much of it down and did not see a 12 pin round cable. I saw something that looked like it had more than 20 pins and was not round so I assume that is not it. Do I have to pull the liner out completely? Could I be missing this cable? Is there any special technique to taking out the liner and putting it back in?

97 A4 Quattro Oil Leak Nightmare

Hey all,

So, I compulsively bought a '97 A4 Quattro with about 150k miles on it last week. It's been my dream car ever since i was 16. Unfortunately, I failed to have it looked at before I bought it, because I got such a great deal, and I didn't want it to get away. So, sure enough, a few days into my new ownership, I smell burning oil.... So I have a look under the car, and there is oil residue all over the bottom of the car. I could actually see smoke coming from one of the shields under the car. So I'm assuming that this has been a problem for quite a while, and that the previous owner neglected to get it taken care of. So I took it to my local mechanic, and he said that there was too much residue to even figure out where the leak originates. So he put some die in my engine, which will supposedly allow them to locate where the leak actually is. I went though the perivous owner's service records, and its latest record mentioned "oil leak coming from under both cylinder heads". So... my first inclination would be a cylinder head gasket. I want to be prepared when I go back into this mechanic, so that I can make an educated decision on how to move forward with the problem. Any idea on how much labor i should expect to replace the head gaskets? If it isn't the head gaskets, and other suggestions on what to look for? Any help would be so greatly appreciated!!!!!

Cheers
Jeff
